Stari Most and the City of Mostar, Bosnia

If you are anything like me, Bosnia and Herzegovina never really ranked in your top 100 countries to visit. Before I went I didn’t really know where it was and certainly had no plans to visit. As it turns out, along with Albania, it is one of Europe’s little unknown gems. I honestly can’t express in words how much I loved it! We had come from the ridiculously touristy Dubrovnik in Croatia, and reaching Bosnia was like visiting your long lost country cousin who had grown up while you weren’t looking and turned into something really lovely. Driving from...

Somewhere Over the Rainbow in Budva, Montenegró

One particularly cloudy day we headed out to Budva which is a beachside town about 30 minutes away from Kotor in Montenegro. We left the rain and gloomy weather and meandered through the winding roads until we went through a long tunnel (about 1.6km) and when we came out the other side we had landed in lovely sunshine. It was a little bit odd and a kind of like a scene in the Wizard of Oz! As you can imagine we were all very happy if not quite perplexed! 10 minutes later we hit the ocean and confronted with Montenegro’s...

Take your kids to Meteora, Greece!

Take your kids to Meteora, Greece!

We left the blue hole in Albania and crossed the boarder into Greece. The boarder crossing was a breeze and we soon found ourselves on nice big, flat and wide highways! Much to our delight and horror we came across a big sign warning us to look out for Bears as we drove. This is the first time we have come across them in their native habitat in Europe and only the second time in all of our travels. The first was in Yosemite in the USA and that is a story for another time. The beautiful green forests were...

Sarandë, Albania and the Beautiful Blue Eye

We headed south to Sarandë (or Saranda in Albanian) which was a large and touristy town right on the boarder of Greece and Albania. Along the way we stopped in a little village just outside Himarë called Qeparo Eshat which was quite beautiful and very local. The drive in was stunning and we took way too many photos. The roads were cut into the cliff and as we meadered around the coastline, new little bays kept popping up. Once we were in the town we came across a bunch of wild pigs and horses who had helped themselves to...

Himarë, Albania – Otherwise known as Utopia!

I am not sure if it was the friendly little town, the crystal clear aquamarine water, the magnificent scenery, fresh local seafood every night for dinner, happy children playing all day in the sunshine, salt on my skin or a combination of all of the above. However I actually think back on our week in Himarë as being one of the best in my life. We drove from Berat to Himarë (or Himara in Albanian) on the Albanian Riveria, and again despite it only being around 150km it took all day to get there. I really believe that if Albania...

Return to Beautiful Bruges

In 2004 Scott and I spent 5 days driving around Belgium and Holland. It was one of my favourite little mini-break that we ever took. The first place we visited was Bruges. Both of us absolutely adored this little town and I can highly recommend going if you are in the area. It is old, quaint, small and easy to walk around. There are waffles, chocolate and beer everywhere. There is even a little bar that we went to called ‘t Brugs Beertje which had over 300 beers (all with their own glasses) to choose from. To say Scott...
